Judicial Indepedence: Why Should You Care?. Is justice for sale? Are politicians influencing the appointment of judges? Are special interest groups and attack ads pressuring judges to conform? Learn the answers to these and other important questions about judicial independence at this forum.

This forum will feature panel discussions with distinguished trial and appellate court judges, academics, attorneys, and other experts. Panelists will include Justices Joan Dempsey Klein, Norman Epstein, and Candace Cooper of the Court of Appeal, former Attorney General John Van de Kamp, and former California Supreme Court Justice Cruz Reynoso. The luncheon will feature Justice Carlos Moreno of the California Supreme Court as the keynote speaker.

Sponsored by the Leagues of Women Voters of Los Angeles, Los Angeles County, Beach Cities, Glendale/Burbank, Pasadena Area, and Torrance, and by the Beverly Hills Bar Association.

A presentation by a member of the League's Study Committee on Los Angeles City Finance will cover some of the basics surrounding the city budget: its transparency, where the money comes from, where the money goes, why land use has become a victim of the city and state financial structure, how decisions are made regarding street and sidewalk maintenance and repair, and why the budget study committee will focus on the city's retirement benefits for the second part of its study.

Various April Unit Meetings - Community College Bonds A and AA. In 2001 and 2003 Los Angeles voters approved bond measures A and AA. These bonds provided over $2 million in funding to be used for capital improvements for the colleges in the Los Angeles Community College District. The LWVLA Community College Study Committee will present information on the status of this extensive program, how this funding is being used at each college, Los Angeles Community College District governance, and citizen oversight.

Various May Unit Meetings - Homeland Secuity in Los Angeles. How are Department of Homeland Security funds being used in Los Angeles and are these efforts making our communities safer?

A core mission of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is to enhance the ability of State, local governments and citizens to prepare, prevent, and respond to terrorist attacks and other disasters.

During the last three years LWVLA has participated in a national project sponsored by the League of Women Voters, HOW IS HOMELAND SECURITY WORKING AT HOME? The focus of the project this year has been to look at the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) program objectives, how the funds are allocated, and how they are being used in Los Angeles. LWVLA project findings will be presented at this meeting.

Flex Your Power in the Tower. The Annual Meeting of the League of Women Voters of Los Angeles will take place in the Bradley Tower of City Hall, starting at 9:00 AM on Saturday, June 16. Business to be transacted will include approval of next year's program and budget, and approval of changes to the League's local positions. Over lunch members will discuss one of many "Hot Topic" issues - from immigration to health care to city finance.
