Our Mission and Role

The League of Women Voters is a nonpartisan political organization encouraging informed and active participation in government. It helps shape public policy through education and advocacy. The League of Women Voters never supports or opposes any political party or candidate.

The League of Women Voters operates at three levels: local, state and national.

The League of Women Voters of Los Angeles (LWVLA) is a local League that performs two separate and distinct roles:

  • Voters Service/Citizen Education: we present unbiased nonpartisan information about elections, the voting process, and issues through our "Education Fund".

  • Action/Advocacy: we are nonpartisan, but, after study, we may use our positions to advocate in the public interest for or against particular policies or ballot measures.

To conduct voter service and citizen education activities, LWVLA receives funds from the League of Women Voters of Los Angeles Education Fund (LWVLAEF, or the "Ed Fund"), which is an Internal Revenue Code section 501(c)(3) corporation, a nonprofit educational organization. Contributions to the Ed Fund (LWVLAEF) are tax-deductible.

LWVLA, a membership organization, takes action on issues and engages in advocacy. LWVLA is a nonprofit 501(c)(4) corporation. Membership dues and contributions to LWVLA are not tax-deductible.

Our Vision, Beliefs, and Intentions guide our activities.
